There were no Democrat resignations this week, so I wish I could say their week wasn’t a total disaster. But that’s unfortunately not true. After consecutive weeks of scandals forcing Democrat legislators-Senate Majority Leader Kelvin Atkinson and Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle-to resign, Democrats in Carson City rushed to ensure the disgraced former lawmakers’ bills would be able to be passed during the legislative session. You read that correctly – despite their political careers being dead, Atkinson and Sprinkle have figured out a way to legislate from the grave. We demanded Gov. Sisolak veto any bills from these two that make his desk, as the Las Vegas Sun reported. But their week of terrible decisions didn’t end there. Following the rush job to save Atkinson and Sprinkle’s bills, Senate Democrats held a hearing on a sweeping abortion bill. While the original bill-which included a provision that would decriminalize disposing a deceased baby even if it was born alive-was scaled back, it is still a horrifying piece of legislation. The committee didn’t vote for the bill, but it will soon. We need all Republicans to call their legislator and demand they vote against this legislation. Sanctuary State Democrat Assemblyman Edgar Flores is fighting to make Nevada a Sanctuary State. He has introduced A.B. 281 this legislative session, and the bill will have a hearing at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29 in room 3138 of the Legislative Building in Carson City. ***Let’s meet at 5th and Carson at 7:00 am on the sidewalk. We are allowed to be on the sidewalk and NOT on the grass.***. Those in Southern Nevada can testify via videoconference in room 4412 in the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas. We need all hands on deck to testify against this dangerous legislation. It is unconscionable that Flores would push this bill so soon after an illegal immigrant was arrested on suspicion of murdering four Nevadans in Reno and Gardnerville. These horrific crimes are exactly why we need to fight to prevent Nevada from becoming a Sanctuary State. Please make sure you can make your voices heard at this hearing on Friday morning. If you can attend, please email me at josh.skaggs@nevadagop.org or call me at 515-512-0858 to let me know. Again, that hearing is on Friday, March 29 in room 3138 of the Legislative Building in Carson City. Those in Southern Nevada can testify via videoconference in room 4412 in the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas. On Your Radar… A.B. 291: AN ACT relating to public safety; prohibiting certain acts relating to the modification of a semi-automatic firearm; reducing the concentration of alcohol that may be present in the blood or breath of a person while in possession of a firearm; repealing state preemption of the authority of counties, cities and towns to regulate the transfer, sale, purchase, possession, carrying, ownership, transportation, storage, registration and licensing of firearms, firearms accessories and ammunition; providing penalties; and providing other matters properly relating thereto. As the NRA notes, this omnibus anti-gun legislation is a threat to both gun owners residing in Nevada and those who are visiting. It criminalizes firearm modifications with language even more broad and overreaching than existing federal regulations. It could potentially criminalize firearm modifications such as competition triggers or ergonomic changes that are commonly done by law-abiding gun owners to make their firearms more suitable for self-defense, competition, hunting, or even overcoming disability. It also expands the ability for local governments to create “gun-free zones,” which only disarms law-abiding citizens and leaves them defenseless against the criminals who ignore such restrictions. A hearing for A.B. 291 hasn’t been scheduled yet, but I will let you know as soon as one has been put on the calendar. S.J.R. 5: Proposes to amend the Nevada Constitution to revise provisions relating to the State Legislature. (BDR C-58): Proposing to amend the Nevada Constitution to provide for limited annual regular legislative sessions and for legislative compensation and expenses to be paid in a manner fixed and determined by law. This amendment to the constitution would shorten legislative sessions in odd years; add 60 days of a legislative session in even years; and double compensation for legislators. Considering how many terrible policies Democrats are pushing this legislative session, do we really want them to have 60 more days of session next year? There is a hearing for S.J.R. 5 on Wednesday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m. in room 2144 of the Legislative Building in Carson City. If you’d like to testify in Southern Nevada, you can do so via videoconference in room 4412 in the Grant Sawyer Building. Please let me know if you’d like to testify at this hearing or the one to make Nevada Sanctuary State being held on Friday at 8:00 a.m. You can email me at josh.skaggs@nevadagop.org or call me on my cell phone at 515-512-0858. If there are any other urgent matters before my next update, I will be sure to let you know. In the meantime, please forward this email to your fellow Nevada Republicans. It is crucial we keep people updated on what is going on in Carson City if we are going to ensure Republican voices are heard during the legislative session.
